I took the dog to the surgery center today, after a merry run-around trying to find it.

She hasn't had the surgery. Because it's going to be $2,500 at minimum. That's the estimate.

Also, she has a highly elevated white blood count. She's got a growth on her gum, which she's had before and it was biopsied and found to be benign. But the surgeon is worried.

So, maybe she also has cancer. We don't know.

Also, I am instructed to buy a crate-she is not supposed to walk until the surgery and then not for six weeks *after*. Oh my god. Remember, this is a dog that catches critters and jumps the fence reguarlly. She will hate this.

PayPal button is still open. But I just don't even know when the surgery will be. The money that has come in has reimbursed the existing vet bills, and I thank everyone for that.

Just...fuck.

Shit, shit, shit. I'm sorry; that's unbelievably crappy.

Are they going to wait to see if the WBC count goes down first? That must be hard to wait.

I can't imagine my dogs on bedrest for that long, but I do know my neighbor didn't keep her dog on bedrest long enough and she re-tore her ACL.

We're gonna wait. My husband doesn't want to do the surgery at all now. But the only other thing to do it to try to limit her movement (which we'd have to do after the surgery for a while anyway).

I want to get this whole white blood cell count figured out, so I want another biopsy of a growth. We'll do that this weekend, probably.

Are you guys thinking of not doing the surgery because of how it will affect her overall quality of health or is it mostly the costs? I ask because I believe some of us could rattle a few more cages for this good cause if it's primarily the money - I think most of us get how tough medical bills can be. (One of my very active dogs had to be 'crated' following surgery and it WAS tough - she was so unhappy (so were we of course) - but when it was finally over and she was fine.)

Both, kinda. I won't consider the surgery until I'm sure she doesn't have cancer, and we couldn't afford it right now anyway.

Right now, we're taking her to the vet tomorrow for the growth on her gum and to get her blood checked again to see if her white blood cell count was helped by the antibiotics. That's tomorrow. And we will be using the money we've gotten so far to pay for that. I hope nobody's mad, because it is all going for vet bills and nothing else. We're just trying to get her better.
