Fun stuff

Got this from [livejournal.com profile] dine, Name your favorite movies starting from the year you were born. She did five, I'm gonna do 1970-1980. Since this is me, expect a generous dose of horror movies and campy stuff.

1970 M*A*S*H, Daughters of Darkness

1971 Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

1972 Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things-see what happens when you haven't seen the Godfather all the way through?

1973 The Exorcist, Charlotte's Web

1974 Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Female Trouble, Phantom of the Paradise (I'm on a roll now)

1975 Jaws, The Rocky Horror Picture Show (even though I'm sick of it now), Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Dog Day Afternoon

1976 Alice, Sweet Alice, Carrie, Harlan County, USA*, Taxi Driver

1977 Star Wars

1978 Animal House, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band-yes, with the Bee Gees and Pete Frampton. So terrible it's a must-see. Also, 1978 is kind of a dry year.

1979 The Muppet Movie, Rock n' Roll High School

1980 The Empire Strikes Back, The Blues Brothers, Caddyshack, The Shining

*Note about Harlan County: I think the way I saw it should get a special mention. I watched it at a house party for the local Socialist Worker's Pary 4th of July celebration. That added something for sure-every now and then one of the party members would see someone on screen and say "oh yeah, I knew her".

There's a lot I still need to see. Some of this stuff I would see on TV when I was young and dismiss it as 'grown-up movies'. A lot of this stuff I saw as a kid or teenager.

But Jim Nabors marrying his partner put a big smile on my face. I've always had a special place in my heart for Jim, since my mom used him as an example of why we should have tolerance and acceptance for gays. She told me this in 1975, when I was five years old. My mom was ahead of her time on that one.

In other news, just saw Warm Bodies and loved it. Great movie, a zom rom com. It's worth it, trust me.

[Error: unknown template qotd]Two favorite movies: First one, Wizard of Oz. I still watch this when I'm having a really bad day or sick.

The second one I've barely seen as an adult, and it doesn't hold up, but it made an amazing impression on me at eight. I had gotten up before everyone else that summer morning, gotten a bowl of cereal, and turned on the Turner station.

And I watched the original Creature From the Black Lagoon. I was stunned, watching the whole movie in fascination, without any interruption as both my dad and sister slept through the morning.

Of course, you watch it now and all the non-gilled characters are as dumb as a box of hammers and everything except the monster and the setting is lousy, but back then? Pure dark entertainment, and probably cemented my status as a horror fan.

[Error: unknown template qotd]Well, going by a movie I actually saw in 2008, probably Doubt, followed by Tropic Thunder. Number three is Pineapple Express, which made me laugh harder than anything in years. Stop-Loss should be mentioned too, a wonderful movie about the war nobody saw.

But...if we're going by stuff that was released in 2008 and didn't make it to theaters in Alabama until this year...Let the Right One In. I cannot stop plugging that movie.
