Writer's Block: Cooking Lessons

I did. My mom would let us stay in the kitchen with her when she cooked something special, and she taught us cake decorating (her job). But what really taught me how to cook was when I went vegetarian at seventeen.
Mom stated up front that she was not going to learn a whole new way to cook just for me, gave me twenty dollars, and told me to get a vegetarian cookbook. I did, the original version of Mollie Katzen's Moosewood Cookbook. That damn book changed my life, now I have over eighty cookbooks and want more all the time. I cook every chance I get. I'm obsessed.
My mom was very smart, making me do it myself like that.
