Jul. 31st, 2010 02:38 pmToday I picked up three Angel Food boxes: a "standard", a kids fruit and veggie box (good for adult lunch boxes too!) and a regular fruit and veggie box. This was about $61, and contains all my meat for the month. If I run out, that's it. Also, I will not have to buy any fruit or veggies this week, except perhaps more apples (Evan scorns Granny Smiths).
The quality of the standard boxes has gone way down: lots of pre-packaged, heat and serve dinners (meat loaf, lasanga, hot dogs, a pizza), and they are phasing out the dessert part-we got four cream cheese Danish. Next month's has no dessert at all, but more ground beef.
(Actually, next months has only about 6 1/2 pounds of meat in it. I don't eat that much animal, so I could probably make it last a month. If not, I can save some over from this one.)
On the plus side, I got a whole chicken. Anyone who knows me knows I can make a four and a half pound chicken last a week or more. Also, I can still get creative, especially with the fruit and veggie boxes.
For instance, I got six little cups of caramel dip to eat with the apples in the kids fruit box. I just used two of them to make carmel flan. I used a cup of sweetened condensed milk, a cup of the 2% milk from the box, and two eggs/two egg yolk for the custard. Put the caramel at the bottom of the cups, mixed everything else, and it's in the oven right now.
And, I got a whole pineapple, something I love but would never buy in a store because of expense. I cut it up already. I suspect some of it will go on the pizza. :D
