Many people have heard versions of this rant in aim or other such places, but I've never fully written it down. Here it goes, the Normal Guy Theory.

This theory states that many bands will have a member who reads as closer to the broad societal definition of "normal" than the rest of the group. Sometimes the Normal Guy is simply normal compared to the rest of the other freaks, in other cases he's so ordinary you can't believe he's in the band. This obviously applies more to bands with a strong musical and/or visual identity (punk, metal, emo). The Normal Guy is more common than you think. Here's ways to find him.

(1) In many cases, the Normal Guy is a replacement for a departing original member. Bob Bryar from My Chemical Romance was their Normal Guy, and he was a sound mixer who had gone on the road with them before-as a sound guy. When he joined the band, he continued to be uncomfortable with the spotlight. Now that he and the band have parted ways, Normal Guy status is now represented by Ray Toro, who previously was a bit too much of a nerdy guitar enthusiast to really have the spot. Other replacements that were the Normal Guy: Jon from Panic! At the Disco, Gilby Clarke in Guns N' Roses.

(2) If the normal guy is an original member, he is often the best friend of the lead singer or main songwriter, the band's lead guy/girl. Izzy Stradlin was Axl's best friend and was the Normal Guy (in a broad sense), until sobriety and wanting to make his own music led to his leaving. Sami Yaffa from Hanoi Rocks was the closest friend Mike Monroe had in the first version of the band, and he had the fewest dramatics of any of the group.

(3) Normal Guys are often drummers, bassists, or rhythm guitarists. Jackie Fox was the Runaway's Normal Girl: bassist and now entertainment lawyer.

(4) Some bands cannot tolerate a Normal Guy and will fly apart if they get one. Motley Crue didn't have anyone within spitting distance of normal until they replaced Vince Neil with John Corabi. That lasted exactly one album. The Sex Pistols threw Glen Matlock out as soon as they possibly could, Johnny Rotten being unable to stand him. The Ramones kept CJ in the band for years, but only because they had the slowest slide to destruction of any major band, ever. A band with a faster metabolism might've spit him out sooner.

Now that we've established who they are, what makes the Normal Guy normal? Usually it's some combination of practicality, common sense, groundedness, and actually being in it for the music. (Normal Guys can be the best or second-best musicians in their band). A goofy sense of innocence can play into this as well. Gilby Clarke on Behind the Music, talking about the GNR debacle in Montreal that led to the stadium being set on fire: "That was my first riot!" If the Normal Guy isn't one of the main songwriters, his contributions might be ignored by the others. This can eventually lead to a split.

The damnest bands can be hiding a Normal Guy: Jeff Magnum was the bass player of the Dead Boys, and in "Please Kill Me", he repeats "All I wanted to do was play the bass really loud". His fellow Dead Boys almost drove him crazy. Megadeth's Dave Ellefson got addicted to herion and still managed to hang on to some of his sweet Midwest-boy charm.

The Normal Guy brings needed balance to an act: Ziggy Stardust needed Mick Ronson to give them a solid rock guitar foundation. The Who needed John Entwhistle to stand there and look mildly embarrassed when the rest of them went nuts. Their stablity can help hold the center of the group together.

When I saw you mention this on Twitter, my first thought was "John Paul Jones". He was Zeppelin's bassist, keyboardist and normal guy. Charlie Watts is the Stones' version. For The Doors...anyone but Morrison. lol Actually, I'd go with Robbie Krieger.

Well written, my music-loving friend!

Thank you! And yes, John Paul Jones-the Normal Guy is kind of a "you know it when you see it" phenomena.

I always thought of John Densmore as the normal guy, but Krieger is a good candidate as well.

John Densmore had a wicked temper, from what I've read. Ray Manzarek was kinda normal, tho.

But yeah, you know them when you see them, for sure.

Now I'm distracted by trying to think of bands where the lead singer is the normal guy, because Fall Out Boy can't be the only example. :)

It's the first one I thought of too.

I read this and automatically thought of Jason Newstead *g*. And then Dave Davis came to mind and I suppose you could call Issac Carpenter a normal(ish) guy. And talking of John Entwhistle, there's John Deacon. The list kind of goes on and on if you think about it.

It does-John Deacon yes! I thought about who would qualify in Adam's band and I think Isaac is it, him or Cam. Isaac might have the edge-Camilla might be more of a superwoman than a Normal Girl.

Very interesting! Would Isaac in Adam's band qualify?

I think it's Isaac or Camilla, yeah.

if you don't count the points in his hair, then Monte is TOTES the norm guy... family man!

I would count him, but his impressive temper has made me put him in the "moody guitarist" box. The four kids and longtime wife as well as his work ethic do make a strong case.

No way, not Camilla. Isn't she like the 3rd keyboardist? But she's way less normal than Isaac.

Or I'm making that up. I know Jack about Isaac. :)

I don't know much about Isaac either, but I'm inclined to think he's pretty normal.

I love this theory as it does seem to work a lot of the time - although finding someone who hits all the "normal guy" traits is sometimes hard.

I immediately thought Nate Mendel for the Foo Fighters - he always seems like the quiet one, especially on stage where he just kind of hangs back and plays bass...has that normal guy look for the most part too. Though he was one of the founding members of the band and isn't the best friend for Dave Grohl...that would go to Taylor Hawkins, who at first doesn't seem like the normal guy at all, but then

- replacement drummer (THIRD one for the band)
- he's actually in "real life" perhaps the shyest and least comfortable with interviews and too much probing into personal things
- had issues with the non-stop touring and pressure on the band that ended up leading to drug problems and near death from overdosing

Yeah, sometimes finding who fits the normal guy template the best can be fun. I would've thought Nate first too.

Icon band: Sylvian Sylvian the only one who qualifies for anything close to normal guy status. I loved his solo record, "Sleep Baby Doll".

your analysis of motley crüe is SO spot on, it's eerie. this warrants a box of wine. toast! *clink*

*toasts with tea cup!*

I don't like the Crue much as a band, but as a social experiment they're awesome.

Oooh this is awesome! It's definitely something I've noticed but never taken the time to really think about.

The only well known band other than MCR that I've paid a whole lot of attention to is Duran Duran. I'd say Roger Taylor was their token Normal Guy. He played his drums and tried to stay out of the spotlight, then left the band when things started getting crazy.

Roger definately was the Normal Guy. He might have been the normal guy for early 80's New Wave as a whole.

Yeah! Sometimes the key phrase is "normal comparatively"!

You're right, Meg and Jack are little weirdos and it works for them.

Um...how about Charlie Watts? He doesn't fit all the criteria but I've heard him say many, many times that touring isn't really his thing, that he doesn't care for all the loudness and chaos and that he'd much rather be at home, relaxing and listening to jazz. Jazz, for Christ's sake. Also, he and Keith Richards are Super Best Friends, joined at the hip.

It's an interesting theory-I can tell you've thought a lot about this!

Charlie, definately. I would've thought Bill Wyman would have been the normal one-before he wound up with a 13 year old girlfriend. And marrying her is no defense!

Charlie just wants a quiet normal life. And he's in the Stones.
